I Speak No Dutch is een performance van de internationaal bekende kunstenaar Carlos Amorales (Mexico). Hij werkt in deze performance samen met een projectkoor van Utrechtse zangers. De performance gaat over de ervaring die je hebt als je aankomt in een land waar je de taal niet spreekt. En over de barrière die taal kan zijn. Speciaal voor dit kunstwerk schreef Carlos Amorales teksten en muziek. Hij brengt deze samen met een projectkoor ten gehore waarbij hij als beeldend kunstenaar de zangers zal leiden met tekens en tekeningen.

Hoe dat in zijn werk gaat, geven de zangers samen met Carlos tijdens de repetities vorm. De teksten van de liedjes zijn geschreven en op muziek gezet door Carlos Amorales en zijn team.

De performance vindt plaats om 14.00, 15.00 en 16.00 uur.

Over Carlos Amorales
Carlos Amorales is een internationaal erkend kunstenaar uit Mexico. Zijn carrière begon in Amsterdam, in de jaren negentig, als student aan de Rietveld Academie en daarna als resident aan de Rijksakademie. In 2019 had hij een solotentoonstelling in het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam en in 2017 deed hij mee aan de Biënnale van Venetië waar hij Mexico vertegenwoordigde. Carlos Amorales is een geëngageerd en veelzijdig kunstenaar. Hij maakt grote installaties, maar ook films, tekeningen, en performances. Hij werkt met geluid en tekst en heeft zelfs eens een platenlabel opgericht. Zijn beeldtaal is eigenzinnig en universeel. In opdracht van de Stichting Kunst in het Stationsgebied i.s.m. de gemeente Utrecht en ZIMIHC heeft Carlos Amorales de afgelopen 5 jaar gewerkt aan I Speak No Dutch. Het project wordt afgesloten met een serie van performances in de hal van de Bibliotheek Neude, een muurschildering in de parkeergarage onder het Jaarbeursplein en een film. Het Centraal Museum in Utrecht zal het werk opnemen in de collectie.

I Speak No Dutch is a performance by internationally renowned artist Carlos Amorales (Mexico) in which he collaborates with a project choir of singers from Utrecht. The performance is about the experience when arriving in a country where you don’t speak the language. And about the barrier that language can be. Carlos Amorales wrote lyrics and music especially for this work of art. He will perform these together with a project choir in which he will guide the singers with signs and drawings. The singers will work with Carlos during rehearsals to find how to make this happen. The lyrics of the songs are written and set to music by Carlos Amorales and his team. The artwork is part of the activities of the Stichting Kunst in het Stationsgebied, commissioned by the Municipality of Utrecht.

About Carlos Amorales
Carlos Amorales is an internationally recognised artist from Mexico. His career began in Amsterdam, in the 1990s, as a student at the Rietveld Academy and then as a resident at the Rijksakademie. In 2019, he had a solo exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and in 2017 he participated in the Venice Biennale, where he represented Mexico. Carlos Amorales is a committed and versatile artist. He makes large installations, as well as films, drawings, and performances. He works with sound and text and even once founded a record label. His visual language is idiosyncratic and universal. Commissioned by the Stichting Kunst in het Stationsgebied in collaboration with the municipality of Utrecht and ZIMIHC, Carlos Amorales has spent the past five years working on I Speak No Dutch. The project will conclude at the end of October 2022 with a series of performances in the hall of the Neude Library, a mural in the parking garage under the Jaarbeursplein and a film. Utrecht’s Centraal Museum will include the work in its collection.

The performance is free. There is a performance at 2 pm, 3 pm, and 4 pm.
